What Foods Improve Vision?

Remember when your mother told you to eat your carrots to keep your eyes sharp for life? Well, she was right!

But in addition to beta-carotene-rich carrots, research shows that there are several other foods that can help make a difference in the quality of your vision today and well into the future. And some might even surprise you.

Salmon

Salmon can give the health of your eyes a powerful boost, thanks to high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins A and D.

Leafy greens

Broccoli, kale and spinach are great choices, as well. They offer a large amount of antioxidants, which can protect the eyes from macular degeneration as you age. In addition, the vitamin C in these types of vegetables (and other vegetables and fruit) can help reduce your risk of cataracts.

Dark chocolate

You may have heard the news stories about the heart-health benefits of dark chocolate, but this treat also has eye-health benefits. Dark chocolate’s flavanoids help protect the eye’s blood vessels, which, in turn, help protect the cornea and lens.

Blueberries

Studies show that blueberries can help improve your night vision.

Garlic

Garlic, as well as shallots, onions and capers, are all rich in sulfur. Sulfur is known as the “antioxidant for the eye;” it helps keep the lens strong over time.

Eggs

Egg yolks offer essential fatty acids, plus several B-vitamins and zinc—all proven to be good for general eye health and protection against the development of cataracts.

Wine

One glass of wine a day has been shown to protect vision by increasing blood flow to the eye. Wine has also been shown to decrease the chances of developing glaucoma. (Of course, the key here is moderation.)

Stay informed.

Eating these vision power foods can help you fend off some of the most common types of eye diseases and vision problems, especially those that are age-related.

In the meantime, if you are worried about the health of your eyes, it is important to see an optometrist or ophthalmologist once a year to stay on top of your vision concerns.

From LASIK vision correction surgery to treatment for glaucoma and more, a complete, routine eye exam can be your first step to better sight.
